What SHOULD politicians be prepared to do to fight Alzheimer's disease NOW?
Second Opinion
Zen and the Art of Coping With Alzheimer’s
By DENISE GRADY Published: August 14, 2007
NewYork Times
During the YouTube forum with the Democratic presidential candidates in July, the first question about health care came from two middle-age brothers in Iowa, who faced the camera with their elderly mother. Not everybody with Alzheimer’s disease has two loving sons to take care of them, they said, adding that a boom in dementia is expected in the next few decades. “What are you prepared to do to fight this disease now?” they asked. The politicians mouthed generalities about health care, larded with poignant anecdotes.
None of them answered the question about Alzheimer’s.
OF COURSE- this has nothing to do with the gov’t actually curing this disease . or any other one. It has to do with what they are going to do to help those who suffer from it, their families and the country( like others) who will be overwhelmed with the boomers getting this uncurable condition in the coming decades. What will they do now to prepare for that future reality?? What will they do now for families who are struggling to care for parents and grandparents with limited resources, financial and otherwise? why wait for the crisis to Really be upon us?
here’s the whole article that inspired this unanswered (by politicians) question:

TV AD: Michael Ignatieff on Family Care
“My mother died of Alzheimer’s disease. Caring for her was the toughest thing that ever hit our family. Like most Canadian families, we took responsibility, but we often felt alone. It’s time to stand together. The Liberal Family Care Plan will provide paid time off to care for sick family members and get you the support you need. Because your government should be there when your family needs it most.” Authorized by the Federal Liberal Agency of Canada, registered agent for the Liberal Party of Canada.

power of attorney question?
I am power of attorney for my father who is in a nursing home. He has Alzheimers disease. And gets very paranoid. One day he loves me and wants my help, the next day he hates me. The following day I am his best friend, the next day he wants to kill me. And so on. During those "bad" days he will tell the nursing home, "don’t give my son any information about my health". And the nursing home listens to him! I will call there and ask the nurse "how is my father doing on the new medication" and they will say "your father says he doesn’t want you to know his medical business". But the next day I can call and if he is in an OK mood, I can get the information. The POA states, "I wish my son (name here) to be treated as I would be treated with regards to my health care information". Isn’t the nursing home making a mistake? This is in New York State. Thank you.

If my mother just died, father has alzheimers and house is still in his name? ?
What can be done? I live in El Paso, Texas and am in need of someone to help me with this. My father is ill with what seems to be Alzheimer’s but is going untreated right now due to insurance issues. If i place him in a home and he has limited health care. Does this mean the state or another agency can take away the house, even when itsstill in his name and i’m his only surviving next of kin. I do hold power of attorny, Does this help any????
Kind Regards.
